M/A-COM Technology Solutions Celebrates 60 Years of Innovation

Lowell, Massachusetts—August 2, 2010. M/A-COM Technology Solutions (M/A-COM Tech), a leading supplier of semiconductors, components, and subassemblies for use in RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave applications, recently held an event at its Lowell, MA headquarters celebrating it products’ 60-year heritage of innovation and looking ahead to its next generation of industry-leading products.
A Legacy of Innovative Products by Innovative People
A number of M/A-COM Tech product lines have a lineage dating back to Microwave Associates, a company founded in the summer of 1950 by Vessarios Chigas, Richard Walker, Hugh Wainright, and Louis Roberts to provide microwave solutions to the defense, communications and broadcast markets. Their many pioneering developments advancing the RF, microwave, and millimeter-wave industry over the past 60 years include:
- Magnetrons, key components for microwave radar;
- Varactor Diodes with noise figure of less than 1 dB;
- The first GaAs RFIC, a T/R SPDT switch, for handset applications;
- The first high power PIN diodes;
- Heterolithic Microwave Integrated Circuits (HMICs), revolutionary microwave and millimeter-wave ICs topology that creates three-dimensional waferscale level;
- Patented new filter technology for high performance CATV infrastructure systems; and
- Patented GPS module that includes an antenna, GPS engine, microprocessor and a CAN transceiver along with three levels of software.
The 60-year Celebration
At a special event held in Lowell, Massachusetts in July, more than 400 employees, partners and friends gathered to pay tribute to this rich history of achievements. The event was hosted by M/A-COM Tech’s Joe Thomas, Chief Executive Officer and John Ocampo, Chairman of the Board and industry veteran. Under Mr. Ocampo’s ownership, M/A-COM Tech remains focused on using core technologies to bring innovative products to the marketplace, such as a new line of low phase noise VCOs and a new family of GaAs pHEMT microwave switches that minimize gate lag times from almost 30 microseconds to less than 20 nanoseconds.
“It is gratifying to see that we are realizing our vision for M/A-COM Tech, as we have focused on taking the company’s rich legacy of technological developments and using them as a platform for growth,” stated Ocampo. “I am honored to participate in celebrating our history at the same time that we look toward to an exciting future.”
The First Name in Microwave Looks to the Future
In addition to its application of core technologies to innovative new products, M/A-COM Tech recently announced a merger which added Mimix Broadband, a fabless supplier of RF, microwave and millimeter-wave semiconductors, to the M/A-COM Tech family of companies.
